Jayshree was born in Allahabad, India. Her father, Dr. S. Dutt, was a distinguished professor of Chemistry at Delhi University, and one of the earliest Indian nationals to earn a doctorate from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London. Her mother, Bela Rani (Guha) Dutt, was an artist and homemaker. Jayshree was married for 40 years to Dr. Arjun Sengupta, until his passing in September, 2010. Jayshree has travelled and lived in many countries and cities around the world, including Brussels, where Arjun was India’s Ambassador to the European Community, and in Washington DC, where he was India’s representative to the International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board of Directors. Jayshree and Arjun Sengupta have one daughter, Mitu, who is a professor of political science.
